How do you ensure effective EU legislation which encourages green transition and circular economy? With a solid technical foundation and involvement of stakeholders.

We have done the processing of requirements for eco-design and energy labeling of products.

Solution

Viegand Maagøe has completed a large amount of energy- and environment analyses for the EU Commission which has formed the background for EU’s eco-design- and energy labeling legislation for a range of products. Here we have used our knowledge about sustainable products and experience with analysis of environmental consequences.

Prior to a new energy legislation, the first step is a thorough technical study.

Viegand Maagøe has i.a. completed:

Analyses of the product types, market and the number of products in EU as of now and in the future
Analyses of usage patterns of the specific products across EU
Technical analyses of the products and a description of solutions to improving the products’ energy- and resource efficiency.
Evaluations of technical possibilities that can improve energy- and resource efficiency in the products’ lifespan
Evaluations of suggestions for legal requirements which can be held up against the products and legal proposals
Calculations of the requirements’ effect on the climate, economy, and resource usage in EU

During the projects we are in close contact with the stakeholders through stakeholder meetings with i.a. the industry, NGOs and Member States of the EU. We have also a close conversation with stakeholders through the project website and comments in sub-reports. Furthermore, we are in contact with relevant experts and companies about data and product technical knowledge.

Result

Eco-design and energy labeling are very effective tools which have contributed to great energy savings in EU. Viegand Maagøe’s effort has contributed to this.

Because of energy labeling, an European family of 3 saves approximately 2.500 DKK in a year.

Because of Viegand Maagøe’s analyses there has been done and presented proposals for EU eco-design and energy labeling regulations for a range of products.

In 2015 the savings were 6.500 PJ due to eco-design and energy labeling in EU. This is the equivalent to the entire primary energy usage of Italy.
